The Scent of Christmas

In 2002 Hallmark Cards, Inc introduced the first "Magic" ornament featuring fragrance. Fragrance as magic? That's right, "Essentially we use the same inserts as those available for refills of room fresheners. We came up with a little heating element to make the tree smell good or to replace one scent with another. Scent has a profound influence on how people feel." explained Ron Carlson in the Winter 2002 issue of For Keeps.

Since 2002, Hallmark Keepsakes has included additional ornaments featuring the "Magic" of fragance including the highly popular 2004 Christmas Cookies and my 'scentimental' favorite the 2007 Making Sweet Rememberings.

So what, you ask was the first Magic ornament featuring scent - the delectably scented 2002 Gingerbread Cottage.

Snowball and Tuxedo - The Best of Friends

"When you were growing up, did you have a special "best friend"? Someone to help you explore the neighborhood; make up games; laugh and share secrets? Those are the memories Joanne Eschrich wanted to express when she created a polar bear cub named Snowball and a little penguin named Tuxedo.

"You may think a polar bear and a penguin are an unlikely pair of friends," she says, "but they remind me of the lion and the lamb! I'm sure they became friends the very first time they saw each other, just the way my best friend and I did."

"I also wanted to create friends who have an adorable difference in size - a bigger, flocked bear in contrast to the small penguin."

This year (2001), you'll see Snowball and Tuxedo taking "A Little Nap." Next year, they awaken to discover the world around them - Snowball still wearing that favorite bright red scarf and Tuxedo in a cheery green cap."

The Snowball and Tuxedo series started with "A Little Nap" in 2001 and continues through 2008. The series has seen these two best friends enjoying a number of fun activities together including snowshoeing, ice skating, sharing treats and reading. The 2008 Snowball and Tuxedo finds the pair sharing a thermos of hot cocoa and friendship.

All of the ornaments in the series were sculpted by Hallmark Studio Artist, Joanne Eschrich except the 2007 ornament which was sculpted by Hallmark Studio Artist, Julie Forsyth. The 2007 ornament is also the only ornament in the series that has offered a colorway or repaint version. The 2007 Snowball and Tuxedo colorway was available as a Multi Year Membership gift to Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club members.

This sweet pair of friends continue to share their friendship and joy with collectors. If you'd like to view all the ornaments in the Hallmark Keepsake Snowball and Tuxedo series just click here.

Ten Years Ago...
A Fabulous Hallmark Event and the
Two Unforgettable Women that made it happen!

1998 marked the 25th Anniversary of Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments - the first American collectible ornaments to achieve the quarter-century milestone. In August of that year, I was one of the nearly 3400 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Collectors Club Members that traveled to Kansas City to celebrate the grand occasion in grand style. 510 participants representing more than 70 local ornament clubs from 32 states and Canada shared their enthusiasm by entering the Local Club Talent Contest. The event offered 12 seminars for collectors to enjoy. A fabulous Parade of Ornaments featured 25 floats, each representing a memorable moment in Keepsake Ornament history. Fireworks provided the parade's grand finale.
Ten years later we've not forgotten the fabulous 25th Anniversary Event or two of the women that (along with many others) worked hard to make it all happen. Lynn and Tex Ann! These two talented women added fun, energy and style to that event and are still fondly remembered by Hallmark Ornament Collectors worldwide!

So, how about an Update!

Lynn Wylie remembers her 1994-1998 tender as the Manager of the Keepsake Ornament Collectors Club (KOCC) as "the best job I ever had"! Ten years later, she still misses both the collectors and Keepsakes. Lynn tells me " Tex Ann and I have stayed in touch through the years as friends and we also reminisce fondly over our KOCC days whenever we get together. It was a really special time in my life. "

Following her assignment as Manager of the Ornament Club, Lynn stayed with Hallmark, managing their Licensing Department, until 2004, then left the company and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she is today.
In Lynn's words, "I moved for a new job opportunity--I work for Dynamic Confections, where I'm VP of Marketing and Business Development (it's my second favorite job ever--top billing still goes to KOCC!). We own four different candy companies (two in Utah, one in Vancouver, BC and one in Kansas City). I live in the heart of Salt Lake City, where I can go from my front porch to a ski lift in 20 minutes. I love living so close to the mountains and am very happy living in Utah. My big project this year has been my home renovation. I live in a 1900 Victorian in a historic district and renovated it top to bottom (watch for it on HGTV!). Tell the collectors I said "hello!" If they're ever in SLC, look me up! : ) "

Yes! You can see Lynn and her newly renovated home on the HGTV program "My House is Worth What?" which will be aired in Nov & Dec this year...watch for it!

Tex Ann Kraft was the Assistant Manager of the Keepsake Ornament Collectors Club in 1998. Tex Ann also counts working in Keepsakes as the highlight of her career. Tex Ann says "As Lynn mentioned, we reminisce fondly about our collector friends and all the fun we had!"

After Hallmark, Tex Ann went to work in sports and entertainment marketing. At Yellow Freight and Sprint she lead teams that managed corporate events at NASCAR races, the Olympics, Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, etc. From there, she went to AMC where she was Vice President of Marketing for 350 theatres. Then, she bid farewell to Corporate America and became a Martha Beck Certified Life Coach. You may be familiar with Martha. She writes a monthly column for "O" the Oprah Magazine. Martha Beck is also the New York Times best selling author of Finding Your Own North Star and, recently released, Steering by Starlight. Last year Tex Ann put her coaching practice on hold when she became a breast cancer survivor. The good news is - all is well! Tex Ann reports " I'm transitioning back into coaching, doing floral design for an interior decorator, freelance marketing projects, and volunteering. Life is good! "Hello!" and big hugs to collector friends! I miss seeing everyone!"

It was great to hear from Lynn and Tex Ann and know that both are doing well in their "Post Hallmark" days. If you would like to say "hello" to Lynn & Tex Ann or share your 1998 Convention memories, we have established a topic in our forum for messages, just click here to visit the Hooked on Ornaments forum to leave your comments and messages.
As always . . .
