Mrs. Claus' Kitchen - In Store Signing Event Pieces

In April, Hallmark Keepsakes will announce the winners (and locations) of this year's 16 In-Store Signing Events. Winners are being selected from entries submitted by Hallmark Keepsake Local clubs which answered the following questions:
  • What makes your local club and Hallmark Gold Crown retailer unique?
  • How are you making a difference in your community?
Entries were received in formats including written, photographic and video. These entries are now being considered by a panel of judges, including Hallmark artists, who must choose the sixteen winners. Four Grand Prize winners will host events that include two current Keepsake Studio Artists AND one RETIRED artist. The four retired artists will be Patricia Andrews, Lynn Norton, Linda Sickman and Sue Tague.

There will be two event pieces available at each of the Signing Events: Mrs. Claus' Kitchen Table and Mrs. Claus' Stove. These two studio pieces feature art from the Keepsake Studio Artists under the direction of Hallmark Keepsake Artist Edythe Kegrize. The table includes work from retired Hallmark Studio Artists as well.

The pieces continue the theme established in 2010 with the release of Santa's Armoire; this year we take an imaginative look into Mrs. Claus' kitchen. The stove features more than two dozen objects including canisters, fresh baked bread, cookies in the oven, a springerle rolling pin and wooden spoons.

You can view the coordinating pieces from the last two years on our website by following the links below.

Final Year For Barbie and Fisher-Price Hallmark Keepsakes

We have heard that 2012 will be the final year for Barbie and Fisher-Price Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments. Due to changes in Mattel's business and licensing strategies, Hallmark and Mattel are no longer able to continue their relationship. As a result, 2012 is the last year that Hallmark will offer the Mattel properties; most notably Barbie and Fisher-Price.
In the 2012 Hallmark Ornament Dreambook (mailing mid-March) you will find that the two Barbie series (Celebration Barbie and Barbie, Nostalgia) are both marked as Final in Series. There will be a total of twelve Barbie Keepsake ornaments available in the 2012 Hallmark Keepsake line - some of them include:
  • 2012 Celebration Barbie #13 and FINAL
  • 2012 Barbie (Nostalgia) #25 Matinee
  • 2012 KOC Porcelain Barbie - Stunning in the Spotlight
  • Student Teacher Barbie
  • Tweed Indeed Barbie
  • Provencale Barbie, Fashion Model Collection
  • Ballerina Barbie
  • Barbie Shoe Chandelier

The Final Fisher-Price Keepsake ornaments available in 2012 will be
  • Corn Popper
  • Two Tune TV
Hallmark Keepsakes introduced Barbie to the Keepsake line in 1994. She will be greatly missed by many Keepsake ornament collectors. The Fisher-Price properties were only recently added to the Keepsake line in 2007 - that year's ornament line included a See N Say, Chatty Cathy, Hot Wheels Rodger Dodger and the Rock Em Sock Em Robots - all Mattel properties. In 2008 the Play Family Farm was the "HOT" ornament. Just like the real-life toy, when you open the barn door you can hear the cow moo.

As collectors we are very sorry to see Barbie, Fisher-Price, Hot Wheels and the other Mattel properties leave the Keepsake line; they will certainly be missed by many.

2012 Sneak Preview - Tom Best Ornaments

Here's a little sneak peak featuring four of the 2012 Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments sculpted by Hallmark Keepsake Artist Tom Best... Here's what Tom has to say about the ornaments...
2012 Rockin Around the Christmas Tree
“I’ve spoken before about my love for music, and this is a great way to celebrate it. I got great response to my guitar ornament last year. My guitar-playing brother Dan gave me kudos on it, and that meant the world to me. And (Keepsake Artist) Nello Williams said he liked it, too. As a maker of guitars himself, Nello is the authority and I consult him on my designs for the guitars. I wanted to put a whammy bar on it, and Nello made sure I knew that it’s a whole different design for the bridge. I pitched the song and the design for this together. As much as this is a cartoon-y shape, I don’t want it to look like a cartoon guitar. I wanted to keep realism about it. All the pickups are correct, and you could pick this up and play it. Last year, we did the countrified version of ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.’ This year, get ready for the shred guitar version.”
2012 Grandson & 2012 Granddaughter
“This ornament is paired with a Granddaughter ornament I did, but the Grandson came first. This started as a sketch I was playing around with of a bubble-headed snowman in a hat, and this is a nod to a style of hat that snowboarders and other young people have brought back into style. And even I have to admit that the proportions of the big head and big hat to the small body make these look cute. But the big reason this design went forward was because the front flap of that hat gives us plenty of room for writing. We always want good vehicles for our editorial messages. We decided next that we needed a counterpart, so I did a girl version of the hats girls are wearing lately, with long string ties and a tassel at the top.”

2012 Frosty Friends #33
“If you look at the history of the series, especially early on, there seemed to be a theme of outdoorsy activity. So when I’m doodling ideas, I always wonder what Frosty might be doing out on the frozen tundra. And usually I look for a sight gag, and I came up with his hitting snowballs with a candy cane before it became a golf idea. The final ornament is really close to the original sketch. Penguins have appeared in the series before, but Frosty also has a new friend this year, which is the fish popping out from the hole in the ice. The first fish done for Frosty Friends was in 2010. When Frosty was fishing, there was a fish in his bucket and his seal friend is stealing it out of his bucket. So the only fish in the series so far has been a dead fish. Will we ever see this friendly fish again? Maybe, but I hope not on Frosty’s grill.”
