Bye Bye Barbie

By this time you should be aware that Hallmark no longer has licensing rights to the Mattel properties which include Barbie, Fisher-Price, GI Joe, and Hot Wheels to name a few. The Fisher-Price ornaments have certainly been very popular since they were first included in 2007, but it is Barbie that will leave the biggest hole in next year's Keepsake line.

The first Barbie ornament included in the Hallmark Keepsake line was the 1993 Holiday Barbie #1. Dressed in a glittering red dress and sculpted by Patricia Andrews, for many years this particular ornament demanded a pretty penny at secondary market shows. This series was quite popular and was based on the annual Holiday Barbie Doll; some collectors consider the Holiday Barbie and Celebration Barbie series as one series.

In 1994 Hallmark introduced the Barbie, Nostalgia series. They began with a splash featuring an ornament modeled after the 1959 Barbie Swimsuit. In 1995, in response to collector requests, Hallmark included the brunette version of the swimsuit Barbie as a club exclusive. In the Spring/Easter line, #1 in the Springtime Barbie was released.

Beginning in 1997 Hallmark began including non-series Barbie ornaments in the Keepsake line. These ornaments have been based on vintage Barbies, as well as, current Barbies. In recent years there have been many beautiful ornaments based on the Barbie Fashion Model Collection and ornaments based on the current Barbie "movie" for each year.

As a collector and a mom with a daughter, I am happy to share that I have most of the Barbie ornaments for those years that my daughter loved everything Barbie. As she outgrew Barbie, I stopped including those ornaments in my yearly "wish list." But I know that one day, she will enjoy having those reminders of her childhood hanging on her own family's Christmas tree.

In recent years, the number of Barbie ornaments included in each year's Keepsake line has continued to grow. By far the most sought after of the recent Barbie ornaments are the Porcelain Club Barbies. These porcelain ornaments with fabric accents feature designs that are very fashion forward and quite simply beautiful sculptures. Many of these club exclusive designs have become quite difficult to find and so prices have continued to rise on these pieces.

This article would not be complete without mention of retired Keepsake Studio Artist Patricia Andrews. She was the sculpting artist behind almost all of the Barbies, her designs and sculpts have continued to be used past her retirement. She was responsible for the first Barbie ornaments in 1994-1995 and many of the 2012 Barbie ornaments are her sculpts.

Here are links to the different Barbie Series and Collections listed on Hooked on Ornaments:

The number of Barbie ornaments included in each year's line has certainly grown in the past few years. Last year there were over ten Barbie ornaments offered. There have been over 200 different Barbie ornaments issued from 1994 - through 2012. Whether you are a Barbie collector or not, I believe next year her absence will certainly be felt.

... Enjoy this special offer ...

Check in and share which event you hope to attend.

Recently I offered a post highlighting the Comic-Con and Barbie Convention exclusive ornaments. The event and exclusive ornament that was left out of that article was the Star Wars Celebration VI exclusive, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ponda Baba.

This two-pack is actually 3 ornaments. (That little severed arm hangs separately. Yikes!) The ornament will be available during the Star Wars Celebration VI event, August 23 - 26, 2012 in Orlando, Florida. The Star Wars Celebration event is attended by Star Wars fans from around the world and is hosted by Lucasfilm.

2012 Summer For Keeps

I thought everyone might like a little recap of the most recent For Keeps publication. For Keeps is one of the benefits of being a Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club members. Here are some of the highlights from the Summer 2012 issue.

'Snowtop' Becomes A Tabletop and Ornament Premiere offer recaps....

Following the success of last year's tabletop decoration based on the Father Christmas series, Keepsakes included a new series based tabletop piece for 2012. Last year's Father Christmas tabletop piece was inspired by the 2005 Father Christmas series ornament and was offered as a special promotion during the Ornament Premiere.

2011 Father Christmas Tabletop

Unlike the Father Christmas tabletop piece, this year's Snowtop Lodge piece is an entirely new design. The designing artist, Joanne Eschrich designed the tabletop piece as though she were designing the piece for the series. She has been the designing artist for each piece in this popular series.

Through July 22nd you can take advantage of a special offer at your Hallmark Gold Crown store to save on this year's Snowtop tabletop piece:

The For Keeps article continues by highlighting other special offers that were available during the July 14-15 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere:

Shoppers were able to register to win one of two prize ornaments given away just for coming in. The Register to Win ornaments were Christmas Cardinal by Tammy Haddix and a Puppy Love Repaint / Colorway ornament sculpted by Anita Marra Rogers.

Design a 2013 Ornament:
Finally, the issue ends with information about a Hallmark Keepsakes survey. Ornament fans can take the surve at www.hallmark.com/keepsakesurvey to help design an ornament that will be part of the 2013 Keepsake line. This year's Merry Chris-moose, was created with the help of 1700 voters.

I hope you have enjoyed this little recap of the Summer edition of For Keeps!

Twelve Days of Christmas #2
Two Turtle Doves

Hallmark Gold Crown stores have been directed to return ALL of the 2012 Twelve Days of Christmas #2 Two Turtle Dove ornaments. Retailers were told that the ornament will be re-issued in October. An aesthetics issue was noted as the reason for the recall.

Hallmark Keepsakes at Comic-Con and Barbie Conventions

July is certainly a very busy month for Hallmark collectors this year. We have the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere next weekend, July 14-15. Most collectors have a local Hallmark Gold Crown store and so the event is easy to attend for most of us. This gives most collectors at least the opportunity to purchase the Limited Quantity Keepsake Ornament Premiere ornaments for this year.

There are two other events that are quite a bit harder to attend in July; both offer Special Edition Hallmark Keepsake ornaments that are historically quite sought after.

The San Diego Comic-Con International is held July 11 - 15, 2012. There will be three exclusive items available for purchase at the event. Hallmark artist, Robert Chad, will be attending the event. Hallmark Keepsakes will also reveal some of the 2013 ornaments. Hallmark Keepsakes will also be attending the New York Comic-Con later this year (Oct 11 - 15, 2012).

The event exclusives that will be offered at each event are:

Batman: A Human Hero
(Limited Quantity: 750 piece)

Cylon Centurion Repaint
(Limited Quantity: 750 pieces)

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
4-Lom and Zuckuss

(Limited Quantity: 1000 pieces)

July 11-14 is the annual National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention held in Garden Grove, CA. This will be the fourth and final year that Hallmark attends this event. Hallmark Keepsakes will offer:

Barbie: Shoe-sational

You can view the ornaments from previous year's events on our website -

2012 Hallmark Ornament Premiere

The weather around the US has been insanely hot over the past week or so making it even harder to believe that the 2012 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere is right around the corner. As a Hallmark collector Ornament Premiere is one of the dates always marked on my calendar. It is so exciting each year when the new Keepsake ornaments are revealed, first in the Dream Book and then hands on at the Ornament Premiere. If you ever have the chance as a member of a local club to help your retailer open the wholesale boxes to stock the display for Premiere – jump at the chance. That is one of my favorite collecting/local club memories. It was like was like Christmas morning and each wholesale box was another gift to be opened and enjoyed. You open up the plain wholesale boxes to pull out the colorful Keepsake box and then open that box to ooh and ah over each and every ornament. It might have taken us a little longer to get the display completed and stocked; but it was an amazing time for us as collectors.

There are a number of Limited Quantity ornaments that will be available at your local Hallmark Gold Crown Stores during the July 14 – 15 Hallmark Ornament Premiere. These ornaments are Special Editions available in limited quantities and tend to sell out quickly as most stores historically only receive a handful.

How many stores do you visit during Hallmark Ornament Premiere? Which of the Limited Quanitity ornaments are you hoping to bring home?
