Count Down To Christmas

A new tradition began in our home when Hallmark offered it's first Countdown to Christmas Clock ornament in 2010.

It's fun to set the clock anytime after October 1st and watch it count down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the BIG Day when it will wish us a Merry Christmas!

The youngest to the oldest members of our family are captivated by this ornament.   It's hard to walk by without checking how much time remains, and we smile as the clock is literally ticking towards our favorite Holiday of the year!

Hallmark has now offered a variety of  "countdown clock" ornaments.
Check out all of the options to get into the "Countdown" spirit!
... in closing today we want to send a big THANK YOU!! and shout out to Brooke at Everything Else Brooke - she posted about Hooked on Ornaments on her blog and we are simply delighted!! We love to hear from our customers and we truly enjoy hearing how we are able to help our customers with their Hallmark collections - all around the world.

2014 Carlton Heirloom Ornaments Have Arrived!

The 2014 Carlton Heirloom ornaments have arrived! and they are AWESOME!! The delivery truck arrived yesterday and the warehouse is jam packed with the new 2014 Carlton Christmas ornaments.

Jessica and Jennifer have been busy this morning sorting ornaments and pulling orders. If you have a pre-order in the system (with no October release ornaments) you should expect your Carlton order to ship by the end of the week at the latest. You probably received a duplicate order confirmation from the original order yesterday when we moved the orders from "Holding" to "New" for processing. (Some customers reported receiving more than one copy. As long as they all have the same order number, they were just inadvertent duplicates and we do apologize for any inconvenience.)
Jessica and Jennifer sorting ornaments.

We are really thrilled to see that the ornaments are even better than last year! We are extremely happy with the quality of the ornaments and the packaging. The colors are vibrant and the sound quality on the magic ornaments is great. Carlton is offering a superb line of ornaments this year.
Another nice feature on the magic ornaments is a hole in the box that allows you to test the ornament without removing the ornament from the box. Batteries are already inserted, so the ornament is ready to go from the box straight to your tree. If you look at the picture below, we've pressed the button on the Godzilla ornament and the base is lit up.

We are delighted that the Carlton ornaments have arrived and look forward to shipping the pre-orders this week. We are certain that you will be as excited as we are with this year's Carlton ornaments. (Once you receive your order we would be most appreciative if you would return to the website ( ) and leave an item review.)
Until next time!

Up Close and In Person

Now that the July Premiere has passed and the July release ornaments are on the shelves at your local Hallmark stores, we've had a chance to see the ornaments in person and there are a few things that might be worth mentioning about a few of the ornaments.

Missing "Series Symbol"
As you probably know Hallmark Keepsake series ornaments have a little Christmas tree symbol with a number inside on the ornament that indicates which number in the series the ornament represents. There are three series ornaments for 2014 that do NOT have the series symbol on the ornaments. The ornament packaging indicates that the ornament is "X in the Series" on the top of the box; but the symbol is not present on the ornaments.

The ornaments affected are:

  • Nostalgic Houses and Shops #31 Andy's Cars
  • Classic American Car #24 1970 Buick GSX

  •  Marjolein's Garden #1 Simple Gifts

Not As Pictured
Through the years we have found a number of ornaments that didn't quite match up to the ornament pictured on the ornament box. What happens is the photography for the ornament packaging is usually done with an ornament prototype. That prototype may be changed before the ornament goes into production or changes might be made during production or it may be just a difference caused by the manufacturing process.

We have had several collectors contact us regarding the 2014 Mary's Angel indicating the ornament in the box doesn't quite match the ornament on the packaging. If you look closely, you might be able to see the difference.

The angel that was produced has her tongue sticking out just a bit as she concentrates on getting her artwork just right. I personally find this completely endearing and I think it gives us a glimpse at this little angel's personality!

Odds and Ends
We noticed during testing that the sound for Great White Menace does not seem as loud as we are used to hearing from the Hallmark Magic ornaments. So if you get one that you think should be louder, rest assured this is how the sound is on this particular ornament.

Our pic for don't miss it? Be sure to check out Woodstock on the pipe organ in the Hark! Music Fills the Air ornament - he moves to the music!
Until next time,
Happy Collecting!

Hooked on Ornaments in the News

Ornament business spreads holidays all year round

06/10/2014 12:10 PM
Nicki Pierce loves Christmas ornaments. She remembers the first Hallmark ornament she bought in 1981 called “Topsy-Turvy Tunes” featuring a little possum hanging upside down. The Johnson County woman soon was hooked on collecting ornaments.
“I learned you could go back and purchase a past ornament you may have missed,” said Pierce. “I became more interested in the secondary market and how you could find them.”
After years of collecting, Pierce opened her own business in 1996 called Hooked on Ornaments. The Olathe-based business specializes in re-selling the tree decorations from the Hallmark Collection.
Hooked on Ornaments has more than 100,000 pieces in its inventory with ornaments being sold only through its website. Pierce has a total of five full-time employees and some part-time help in the holiday season. The ornaments, the majority of which are Hallmark designs, range in price from a few dollars up to $1,000; Pierce said the ornaments seldom cost more than $300.

Q: Where do you get the ornaments?
Pierce does all of the purchasing for Hooked on Ornaments extensive inventory.
“I buy direct from manufacturers and collectors or I buy out competitors,” she said. “We don’t buy directly from Hallmark because they won’t sell directly to us.”
Pierce does buying year ‘round to keep her inventory up to date. The company sells a few additional items “that complement and fit in with the Hallmark ornaments we collect,” Pierce said. Products include items from Overland Park-based Demdaco.

Q: Isn’t yours a seasonal business?
The busiest time of year is October through the holidays, she said, so she and her two sons started a second business, Big Time Cruisers.
“They sell bicycles that are fun, with wide tires and retro styles,” Pierce said. The business is based in the same building as Hooked on Ornaments, and its sales are primarily through the Internet.
“But they are getting more walk-in business,” she said. The sons are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the bicycle business.
“This is a way to bring in more cash during the off season and keep employees,” Pierce said.

Q: How did you get started?
Pierce started the ornament business from her home. She outsourced her website to a woman who was a fellow collector but who lived out of state.
“We started a relationship in the beginning that continues today,” Pierce said,
Over time, Pierce reached out to the Olathe Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Center for advice.
Eight years ago, the business had grown so much that Pierce decided it was time to move it out of her home. Hooked on Ornaments first landed in space at 92nd Street and Quiviria Road. Just two years ago, Pierce decided to move again.
“We were able to purchase a warehouse space in Olathe with 9,000 square feet,” she said.
Customers seldom visit the warehouse with the exception of a twice a year sale to refresh inventory.
Hooked on Ornaments has increased its sales every year, but Pierce said there is more competition than ever for business.
“Ebay is a huge factor,” she said. “There are a lot of sellers that do what we do on a smaller scale.”

Q: How do you compete?
“We offer extremely good customer service,” Pierce said. Hooked on Ornaments provides its customer photos of the items as well as video if it is a moveable ornament. Each item has a detailed description.
“We compete by offering a rewards program where they get points with their purchases, special sales, gift wrap, gifts with purchases and free shipping with a minimum purchase,” she said. “We also have ‘Top Ten Reasons’ to buy from us on our website.”
Orders for ornaments have come from all over the world, said Pierce, including “remote countries and islands in the South Pacific we have to look up.” The company does a considerable amount of business with customers in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
“Being Internet only makes the whole world your customers, and that’s what has allowed us to grow,” she said.

Q: After almost two decades in the ornament business, are there still challenges?
“Keeping up with the ever-changing technology and the decline of collectibles,” Pierce said. “The Internet has driven the price of collectibles down, but we’ve been lucky that people still like ornaments.”
Pierce also works hard to keep her overhead costs down.
“We’re always looking for better ways to do things,” she said.
Pierce doesn’t collect ornaments the same way she did before her business but says: “I continue to love the ornaments. I used to decorate to the hilt during the holidays but I don’t now. There isn’t time. I get to enjoy them 365 days a year.”
Pierce likes the customer contact, as well.
“I enjoy the people who collect ornaments,” she said. “It’s a really fun thing. They buy something they really want and that has meaning to them.” Original Article from Kansas City Star
