Hallmark Keepsakes recently unveiled the 2012 Hallmark Club Member Exclusive ornaments and we are very excited to share the news here on the Hooked on Ornaments blog!

In-Store Signing Event Pieces

In April, Hallmark Keepsakes will announce the locations for the 2012 In-Store signings.
The two signing pieces will be available at each event. They coordinate quite well with Mrs. Claus' Cupboard.

During July, many people (non-Hallmark collectors) complain that July is too early for Christmas ornaments to be on retailer shelves. If they only knew how excited I get with each new ornament unveiled in January to March. I've barely gotten my ornaments packed safely away and I'm already excited about the new line of ornaments yet to be released. It's a little like Christmas morning, each newly revealed ornament is a little gift. The wonderful thing about being a collector is; I get the same 'new' thrill when I get to see that same ornament in person for the first time.

Hallmark Little Gallery Pewter Plates

Hallmark's LITTLE GALLERY... Premier Quality, Exquisite Detail...Simply Beautiful.

Hallmark's Little Gallery items are in the "vintage" category these days, thus many of today's Hallmark collectors are unaware of these beautiful, ultimate quality pieces.

The Little Gallery line was introduced in the early 1970s and was discontinued in early 1990s. Considered the ultimate collectibles and gifts, hundreds of items were offered, including pewter figurines, glass items, pewter plates, dolls and more.

Today, lets take a look at the Little Gallery Pewter Plates...

The 1977, first in the series of thirteen Christmas Pewter plates was designed by Robert Haas. All twelve of the subsequent plates were designed by legendary Hallmark Artist, Mary Hamilton, and engraved by a variety of artists including Don Palmiter and Dill Rhodus.

Limited editions of just 17,500 or less were produced.

The six-inch Christmas plates were produced in New England and were cast of the finest pewter, with 92% tin for the highest possible luster. All are hand finished to achieve delicate shading and intricate detail.

In 1977, the first year, the pewter plates were listed at a retail price of $39, with increases in the retail price each year until reaching a plateau of $60 in 1980.

In addition to the Mary Hamilton Christmas series, the Little Galleries line also offered a series of six Special Days plates.

Our Fall Warehouse sale was Saturday, Oct 22. There was great weather outside, but the great bargains and loads of fun inside the warehouse contributed to yet another amazing event!

Sue Tague was our signing artist - we are so grateful she was able to be here with us, and the collectors who attended and got things signed were delighted to visit with her as well.

Our "Secret Mystery Guest" was Stella Harrington, voice of the 2010-11 Story of Christmas ornament! She visited with collectors, posed for photos, and signed ornaments like a pro! As a special treat, Sharon Visker stopped by! Sharon was the artist for the 2010-11 Story for Christmas ornament, and is always a delight.

What can I say? I love this nativity set, I only wish that Hallmark would surprise us with some animals and angels to add to the collection. A "new" Mary Hamilton Nativity for a "new" generation of collectors.

If you missed out on the first two pieces of the collection, they were the 2009 Newborn Blessing and the 2010 Gifts We Bring. We do currently have the Gifts We Bring available, but the Newborn Blessing is getting harder and harder to find and we have a hard time keeping the ornament in stock.

So this morning I'm on an internet hunt, looking for a picture of a particular item and in my search I dropped by The Seasonal Home. I didn't find the picture that I was looking for but I did find a super "How To."

Since I'm definitely in the mood to start decorating I HAD to share! You're going to love it!

What I love most? Eileen includes such wonderfully detailed instructions. I am able to use her instructions and examples to create an unlimited number of decorations using what I have available. I can't wait to create my own spray!

We're back from the 2011 National Event and things are slowly getting back to normal. Once school starts back next week I hope to get back into the routine of consistently posting to the blog twice a week. For now, I thought every one might like a little "Sneak Peak" information unveiled at the recent San Diego Comic Con and at the KOC National Event.

At the recent 2011 San Diego Comic Con Hallmark shared three of the Star Trek ornaments from the upcoming 2012 Keepsake line.

Magic ornament depicting a scene featuring the Spocks from two realities, the ornament will feature dialogue from the 2009 feature film.

At the recent National Event - 25th Class Reunion - in Kansas City more Sneak Peaks were unveiled, pictures were not allowed so we only have descriptions to share...

Angels Around the World will be Germany.

Two Turtle Doves - This ornament features two turtle doves entwined with a heart dangling beneath. This will be the only ornament in the series featuring more than one figure. (IE: three french hens will be portrayed by one figure, not three)

New Series: Cookie cutter - We hear that there will be a new series next year that is very similar to the Sweet Snowmouse cookie cutter ornament from this year's event. First in series will feature a mouse on a sleigh.

Signing Pieces: Are you ready for the 2012 Artist Signing Events? The signing piece will be Mrs. Claus' Stove, there is also a companion piece - Mrs. Claus' Baking Table. It's my understanding that these pieces coordinate very nicely with the Cupboard and Armoire.

Mary's Angels Tabletop Piece: A group of fluffy clouds provides the base to feature angel designs from the past - a spot in the center is open for the 2012 Angel - who wears blue and holds a songbook. The piece is lighted and plays three different songs. When the 2012 Angel is in place the child's voice will sing "Angels We Have Heard On High."

Ornament Donation Project

A devastating tornado recently struck Joplin, Mo. Five Keepsake ornament collectors from the Bright Christmas Dreamers Local Club in Joplin are storm victims along with hundreds of others.

Keepsake Collectors on the YuleLog internet bulletin board suggested collecting ornaments for these victims at the upcoming Aug 5-6 "Keepsake Class Reunion Event" in Kansas City.
This project is truly a Keepsake collector initiative arising from the hearts of individuals who would like to share their ornaments with those that in an instant suffered great loss.

*If you would like to participate, place your ornament donation in the collection boxes located in the Secondary Marketplace (Pershing Hall - Hyatt Hotel lobby level) on Fri & Sat 9-5.

*A giant "Joy for Joplin" card will be near the donation boxes. All collectors are invited to sign this card.

*The giant card and donated ornaments will go to Amanda's Hallmark in Joplin. Amanda's currently has signs in the store asking tornado victims interested in ornaments to contact them. The information collected will be used to get the ornaments to those victims that will enjoy & appreciate them.

*The Bright Christmas Dreamers Club will sort and distribute all donations.

2011 Hallmark Child's Age Collection

I've been busy this week adding the new 2011 ornaments to the Hooked on Hallmark Ornaments database. In the next week or so we will begin acccepting preorders for the 2011 Hallmark ornametns, so I've been spending every waking moment adding the items with description and pictures.

This week when I was paging through my 2011 Hallmark Ornament Dreambook I noticed something that I knew I would want to point out here on the blog.

If you have been buying the Child's Age Collection with the teddy bears and cookies - this is the FINAL year. This year's ornaments will be undated and you will need to purchase all of the ornaments in the collection to complete your collection. If you bought the 2010 Baby's First Christmas last year ... this year you will need to buy Baby's Second, Child's Third, Child's Fourth and Child's Fifth this year.

This is the second time that Hallmark has ended a Child's Age Collection with out continuing the dated pieces to the final year. Previously Hallmark ended the Child's Age puppies and kittens. MANY collectors didn't find out they were meant to buy all the pieces in the collection during the final year until they were unable to find the ornaments in the stores in 2007.

If this collection is like the previous collection the Child's Fifth Christmas will be the hardest to find. Whether you started in 2007 or in 2010, EVERYONE will need the Child's Fifth.

I have to say I LOVE the new Child's Age Photoholders and look forward to this new collection. I would have loved to have had a set like this for my kids.

Artist Susan Lordi hand carves each original Willow Tree® sculpture. Using family and friends as models, Susan tries to capture a moment in time, or express a feeling. Trombone Tony Joins the Snowman Band

Last year, my family LOVED the 2010 Snowman Band. Originally, I had to have the set because I have a High School Marching Band sax player in the house. But the set was a HUGE hit with my daughter and husband as well. We each had our favorite band member and whenever someone walked by, music quickly followed.

I was delighted to see there will be a new member joining the band in 2011...
Trombone Tony will interact with the other members of the Snowman Band. He plays "Joy To The World" and "Good King Wenceslas." Trombone Tony will be available beginning November 4th. I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that he will be difficult to find. So get yours early. (Because he will be most desired by collectors who have the previous 4 pieces and I don't believe those 4 pieces are being re-released I would assume that production numbers will be low for Trombone Tony.)

2011 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Dreambook

As you are probably aware the 2011 club edition of the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Dreambooks began arriving in mailboxes last week. (If you can't wait until the Dreambooks are available in local stores in July you can purchase one from Hooked on Ornaments - here.)

If you are happy to browse online - you can take a look at the online version of the Dreambook at Hallmark.com - here. (At the moment you will need to be a member of the Keepsake Ornament Club - KOC - in order to view the online Dreambook.)

The big story for 2011 in my opinion is the new Magic Ornament Power Cords. In my position as customer service rep for Hooked on Ornaments I hear from customers every year with light strand issues. As electrical standards and regulations have changed through the years so have the light strands; it has become increasingly difficult to find compatible light strands for the older magic ornaments. In response Hallmark introduced light strand adapters and it seems discontinued the "light strand" magic ornaments.

Although the "light strand" ornaments were discontinued, the "Magic" ornaments continued with battery powered ornaments. Unfortunately, battery power is simply not able to provide the power for continuous motion and light that appeals to many collectors.

Last year, Hallmark introduced the Wonder and Light Collection of ornaments. This new collection featured continuous light and a synchronized light show that incorporates all the magic ornaments connected to the power cord. The power cords return this year with a number of new ornaments that are powered by the new Magic Cord.

Checking It Twice is first in the Once Upon a Christmas series. Decking the Door is a complement piece to the new series. This series will depict the story of Santa's annual preparations for his night of spreading Christmas joy around the world. As a Magic Cord ornament, Checking It Twice will spread its show of light and sound to every other ornament connected to the cord.

Marie Corbin, merchandise manager, describes the ornament, "Santa's narration starts and the book illuminates with a glow that can be seen on his face. The ornament then leads a whimsical coordinated sound and light show."

The new Magic Cords will support up to 7 ornaments total (or 6 ornaments and a tree topper). "At the touch of a button, each one will lead the rest of your Magic Cord ornaments in a synchronized sound and light show."

Two other ornaments powered by the new Magic Cords are Disney's Mickey and Friends - "Jazzy All The Way" and Peanuts "Ho! Ho! Ho! Tasty Snow!

Sneak Peak - 2011 Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments

I thought we might spend some time today looking at a few of the 2011 ornaments. It is our understanding that there will be four new series for 2011.

The first series is Pixar and the first ornament in the series will be "Up"

The second series is pictured above - "Santa's Story" has constant light and will be able to lead synchronized light shows when other ornaments are connected to the power cord. The ornament features voice and music to help tell the story of Santa's preparations for his annual journey. The ornament is sculpted by Robert Chad; but also features elements from past work of more than a dozen artists. This ornament is one of four Keepsakes that will be powered by the new Magic cord introduced with the "Wonder and Light" Collection.

Hallmark Lunchbox Ornaments

I was trying to decide on a fun topic for todays blog...
Something fun, ornaments that could be appropriately displayed in February...

and thought of the Hallmark Lunchbox collection!

This unofficial collection of ornaments is one of my favorites and appeals to me on a number of levels. The lunchboxes are pressed tin and they really do open and close! Most of the lunchbox ornaments were issued with a coordinating thermos. Today's lunchboxes are vinyl, foam and velcro. The ornaments' old fashioned lunchbox design appeals to my nostalgic side, but the appeal doesn't stop with the physical design.

Take a look at the artwork decorating the lunchboxes and enjoy a stroll down memory lane: The Lone Ranger, The Jetsons, Scooby Doo, Super Friends; these were some of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons! Back when Saturday was the ONLY day that there were cartoons on television. Howdy Doody, Hopalong Cassidy; and for the younger generation - The Empire Strikes Back, Hot Wheels and the Beatles! As a collector the fact that the lunchboxes are cross collectibles appeals as well. A Peanuts Hallmark lunchbox ornament will appeal to Hallmark Collectors, Lunchbox collectors and Peanuts collectors. I've talked to some collectors who display all three designs - the Hallmark ornament, the Hallmark School Days lunchbox and the original vintage lunchbox. That's a display I would love to see!

In memory - Hallmark Keepsake Artist - Donna Lee

Hallmark Keepsake Artist Donna Hill (Lee) passed away February 8, 2011. Donna was a Hallmark Keepsake artist for 30 years. Her ornament designs will forever be treasured by Hallmark collectors.

Hallmark Keepsake Studio Artist, Donna Lee sculpted hundreds of Hallmark Keepsake ornaments before her retirement in 1993. At the time of her retirement Donna had sculpted all of the Nostalgic Houses and Shops, one of Hallmark's most popular series. The ornaments that Donna designed for Nostalgic Houses and Shops were inspired by the buildings, the people and her memories from childhood; as were many of the ornaments that she designed.

One of the original four artists chosen to begin the Keepsake Ornament department, Donna Lee joined Ed Seale, Peter Dutkin and Linda Sickman as the artists responsible for giving life to the Hallmark Keepsake ornament line that we still love today. In 1975 Hallmark introduced the first 'handcrafted' ornaments to the Keepsake line. There were twelve handcrafted ornaments that first year and Donna Lee was responsible for the six Adorable Adornment ornaments.

Besides the Nostalgic Houses and Shops series, Donna created many more of Hallmark ornaments most memorable designs. Before the beginning of Keepsakes, Donna was working in Hallmark's Specialty Design Department. During her time there she brought in a prototype of a goofy looking reindeer; that reindeer became one of Hallmark's all time best selling properties, Rodney Reindeer. In 1982 the Musical Angel became the first in an unofficial collection of angels that Donna calls the 'mischievous angels.' Collectors simply call them the Donna Lee angels. Donna Lee also championed the miniature ornament line. Original market research caused Hallmark to reject the idea of the miniature line. Donna Lee was instrumental in persuading some of the other studio artists to help her create a small tree complete with miniature ornaments. When presented with the result and shown the concept the miniature line was approved.

In 1993 Donna Lee retired from Hallmark primarily due to her health. But after a couple of years of retirement Donna pleased collectors by introducing the short lived Starry Eyed Ornaments. The Starry Eyed ornaments were only produced for a short period of time, but the detail of these ornaments is extraordinary and like most of Donna's Hallmark designs, each had a story of its own.

Joanne Eschrich, Keepsake Ornament artist was asked,
"When you have an assignment, where do you start with it?"

Her answer, "Most of the licensed ornaments are usually requests that start from a drawing. Those are fun, ‘cause you’re looking through all sorts of references, taking a little bit of everything and cre...ating something a little different with Wonder Woman or Donald Duck. Most of my series came from my ideas or a request for more snowmen or Santas in the product line. From there, I’ll start from brainstorming from scratch and come up with sketches after sketches and sometimes it’s a matter of showing 10 or 20 different ideas that I share with the team to bring it in and find a focus."

Recently there have been some fun Faceboook posts from Hallmark. This week we thought we would share them with you here on the Hooked on Ornaments blog.

Hallmark Keepsake ornament artist Tracy Larsen was asked,
"How long does it take to create an ornament from a sketch to 3-D?"

His answer, "It depends upon the ornament. Generally give us a couple of weeks to sculpt a piece, that’s the normal timetable we have. You may be working on two or three different pieces at the same time at different parts of the process—painting one and sculpting another. Sketching out another. We try not to multi-task, but two weeks is the general ballpark of time we have to sculpt a piece. We create prototypes, and packaging all at the same time. There are a whole lot of people in the works that help these get out into the stores."

October Warehouse Sale

We had another wonderful Warehouse Sale last Saturday! The lovely Linda Sickman showed up early to sign and stayed with us until 2pm, signing ornaments for collectors from all over the United States. We had friends visiting from Iowa, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and California, as well as collectors from the local area!
LaDene Votruba and Sharon Pike stopped by with Joyce Lyle to visit with Linda and chat with collectors. We were also delighted to have Lynn Norton stop by!

As always, we helped complete collections for avid collectors as well as helping to start some new ones. It is always fun to help someone who is on the hunt for a special treasure or a great bargain. Get Your "Boo" On! Halloween Decorating Ideas

. . . time to decorate my 4 foot, black Halloween Twig Tree (Marge’s Specialties in Orlando, FL). I added orange ball ornaments (also from Marge’s), some artificial sugary, candy corn garland (found at Ross Stores or on eBay), wooden eyeball cut-outs (purchased these many years ago, but they would be easy to make if you are handy) and various Halloween ornaments, including several by Hallmark. [some of the Hallmark ornaments are from previous years, but you can still find them at www.hookedonhallmark.com].

I perched my tree on top of a table I already had, which I covered in 2 fabrics (a silver spider web over black jersey print I found at JoAnn’s, etc. and an orange satin I found at Wal-Mart). I topped the 2 fabrics with an oversized spider web. Using this brings the texture in the tree down into the table covers, creating some continuity.

Last, but not least, I added my bendable, ghost tree-hugger (Joann’s, etc., a couple of years ago) to the tree top and placed a glittery “BOO” sign in his hands. 2010 Artists On Tour

What's the latest 'scoop' on the 2010 Artists on Tour events and the 2010 Santa's Armoire signing piece? With four of the event weekends completed one thing is for certain at this point, the Santa's Armoire is going to be a difficult piece to find on the secondary market.

The first events helds August 7, 14 and 21st each reported similar stories. Lines formed hours before the store opening and the Armoire sold out within the first hour of the event. We have heard that hosting stores have had the option to purchase 290 of the Armoires for the events, some stores did not buy their full allocations. It has been reported that the Bloomington, IL signing offered 390 Armoires, but there were still collectors who were turned away empty handed.

We do have a VERY LIMITED supply of the armoire available. If you are unable to attend one of the signing events.

Hallmark Halloween 2010

Visit your local Hallmark Gold Crown store soon to find some spooky fun Hallmark Keepsake ornaments. If you love the Halloween ornaments we suggest you buy early - the Halloween ornaments aren't produced in the same quantities as the Christmas Keepsakes and may sell out well before Halloween.

This year's Keepsake line features the Peanuts Gang in their Halloween finery ready for trick or treating. You might notice that the boxes for the Halloween ornaments are smaller than in previous years. As indicated in an earlier blog post you'll find that the box sizes this year are smaller, but the ornament size hasn't changed.

Hallmark Berry Sweet Bears

So over the past couple of weeks we've been getting quite a few calls asking about the Hallmark Keepsake Berry Sweet Bears. These adorable bears were issued in "Chocolate" and "Vanilla".

The "Chocolate" Berry Sweet Bear was given away as a Register To Win prize during the 2010 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere. Each participating store received one of the Chocolate bear to award as a prize. That means there are approximately 3500 of this item in existence.

The "Vanilla" Berry Sweet Bear will be given away as a Register To Win prize during the 2010 Hallmark Artists On Tour signing events that will be held in 16 different locations across the United States August 7 - October 16. (Click here for more information.) The "Vanilla" bear is "repaint" or "colorway" of the "Chocolate" bear. We are hearing that a number of this item will be given away at each signing, but the production numbers will still be very small for this item. We also aren't exactly sure what a "number" might be, definitely sounds like more than one; but does that mean 5, 10, 20? No, one knows at this point.

I took a look at ebay to see how the values are fairing for the Keepsake Ornament Premiere "Chocolate" bear. It looks like the Chocolate bear is averaging auction prices of $150 - $175. That's pretty sweet.

There have been a number of people calling about whether or not we will have either of the bears in the future. You can never tell. It is highly possible, but we have no way of knowing when that may be.

Hallmark Packaging Going Green

The 2010 Hallmark Ornament Premiere was last weekend, July 10th and 11th. You may have noticed that something looked a little different while perusing the display of new 2010 Hallmark Keepsake ornaments.

It seems that Hallmark has made a couple of little changes that can make a big change for our environment. The first and most noticable change is that the ornament box size has been reduced. You'll find that the boxes this year are smaller than what most collectors are accustomed to seeing. In general we have found that ornament size hasn't decreased, only the "wiggle" room inside the box.

Here are a couple of nice comparison photos showing the ornaments and boxes of this years ornaments compared to last year's ornaments and boxes. Note again that ornament size is the same, only the extra space inside the box has decreased.

You'll find the second change when you open the box and look inside. Last year there were a handful of ornaments that were wrapped in tissue paper instead of the "normal" bubble wrap or plastic insert. This year when you get your ornaments home you will find that the majority of the 2010 Hallmark Keepsakes feature the tissue paper interior packaging.

Of course tissue paper interior packaging is not new to Keepsakes, during the early 90s most of the ornaments were packaged with tissue paper. Although its almost impossible to get the ornament wrapped back up to its original state, paper (especially recycled) is much kinder on the environment than plastic.

2010 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere

It's that time of year again. For most people July means summer vacation, trips to the pool, and lots of sunshine and heat. For Hallmark Collectors, July means Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere. This weekend, July 10-11, you will find most of us at our local Hallmark Gold Crown stores bright and early. Most Gold Crown stores will open early for the event.

Ornament Premiere gives Hallmark ornament collectors their first "hands on" look at the new ornaments and there are often festivities planned by local clubs. You won't want to miss the Ornament Premiere featured ornaments either ...

As a member of the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club (KOC) you are eligible to purchase the porcelain Siren Barbie Doll ornament. If you make a minumum purchase of $7.95 you are also eligible for the Smiling Soldier ornament just for showing your KOC membership card.

There are four register to win ornaments this year. Each store will be receiving one of each of the four designs, this means that the production size on these ornaments is approximately 3500 each.

Hallmark Miniature Gallery (1974)

Have you ever heard of Hallmark Miniature Gallery products? Most Hallmark collectors haven't. Before the new Hallmark Galleries Collection, there was the Little Gallery giftware line that began in the late 1970's and was discontinued in the early 1980's. But if you go back even earlier in the history of Hallmark than Little Gallery, you'll find Miniature Gallery. Not much is known about this line, and I'd guess that most of the information on it has been lost over the years

Miniature Gallery was the predecessor to Little Gallery, and was started in the early 1970's. Miniature Gallery items included cameo lapel pins, miniature "canvas" prints of paintings complete with easels, and these rare, early Hallmark Christmas ornaments.

Two of the six Miniature Gallery ornaments that were available are shown in this issue, here on the front and back covers. ( Our blog article shows a picture of all six ornaments produced.) They are hard, white-plastic discs, and measure 3 1/4" across and each has a 1/4" deep rim. They hang from olive-green yarn. Recessed in the back of each disc is a circle of olive-green felt that is captioned "Merry Christmas 1974." A rectangular gold-foil sticker identifies each ornament. At the top of the sticker is the Hallmark "crown." Below that it reads:

Hallmark Inquiring Minds Wanted To Know

There has been a rumor among Hallmark Ornament collectors for years regarding the 1992 Stocked With Joy tin ornament. It was thought that the tin used for the 1992 Hallmark ornament was "reused" from a previous Mary Engelbreit Santa ornament that was never produced due to licensing issues.

Well, we had to know...
... and the answer is no. The tin used for the 1992 Stocked With Joy Hallmark Keepsake is not a resuse of the tin from the unproduced ornament.

Cupid Merry Miniature and Boxes

As Merry Miniature collectors know Merry Miniatures produced prior to 1996 were never packaged in boxes - except... the 1983 Cupid.

The 1983 Cupid Merry Miniature is one of the hardest of the Merry Miniatures to find. It's even harder to find in its original box. We recently received one that is not only in its original box, the box is in mint condition. (Here's a link if you'd like to check it out.)

Merry Miniatures were sold from 1974 to 1996 unboxed. In 1996 Hallmark began issuing Merry Miniature sets. Those sets were sold boxed. Collectors were generally not happy with the sets and in 1999 Hallmark returned to individual Merry Miniatures. These were boxed in plastic cases. In 2001 the Merry Miniatures were discontinued.

2010 Comic Con Hallmark Exclusives

Here's a great one I came across this morning. The people in the video worked on the 2010 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Dreambook - (and the writer who loves the Star Trek ornament, he was in charge of one of my bingo games during the KOC event last year! He is hilarious and was tons of fun at the event.)

Run, Rudolph, Run and Hallmark Guitar Ornaments

Today I'm still hard at work adding 2010 Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments to the Hooked on Ornaments database/website. I just added the 2010 Run, Rudolph, Run ornament and thought I'd share some thoughts on Hallmark guitar ornaments. Electric guitar, classic guitar, Hallmark has included both in the Keepsake designs.

For this ornament in particular, I have to say "Run, Rudolph, Run" has to be one of my all time favorite Christmas songs. Although, my apologies to Chuck Berry, I really thought the name of the song was "Run, Run, Rudolph". The ornament itself, at least comparing pictures, is very similar to the 2009 Jingle Bell Rock. Here's a pic and I'll let you compare...

The 2009 Jingle Bell Rock, has a base coat of red, while the 2010 has a base coat of white. The 2009 has white control knobs, the 2010's knobs are black. The background behind the bells on the 2009 ornament is gold, on the 2010 the background is red. All in all, they appear quite similar. Honestly, I love them both! I can see a whole themed tree for my teenaged son's room. He would love it.

Perhaps you're asking, "That's great Rhonda, but what about other guitar ornaments?" Well, you're in luck, because Hallmark has made quite a few! There were actually three ornaments in 2009 that featured a guitar - Jingle Bell Rock, of course, but there was also Scooby Doo "rockin' it", as well as, Snoopy and Woodstock. But Hallmark's first guitar ornament was the 1986 Christmas Guitar.

Very Special Mother's Day Ornament

1983 Mother's Love

Only once has Hallmark offered a Keepsake Ornament for Mothers Day.
The 1983 Mother's Love classic shape ball is beautiful. Light violet in color, it's packaged in a pink box with special stock # MDQ3407. This wind up musical ornament plays "Swan Lake" and comes with a small round acrylic stand as well as a loop for hanging. Beautiful violets adorn most of the ball along with the caption: "A Mother's Love becomes more beautiful through live's changing seasons"

Hallmark's low production of this ornament makes it rare and so hard to find that it was not included in most Hallmark Ornament Value Guide Publications. It was one of the hardest ornaments to find for photography for the 2006 Hallmark Value Guide. AND we do currently have two of these rare ornament available on our site...the first time in many years we've had it in our inventory!. Check it out on our site at http://www.hookedonhallmark.com/

A Hallmark Ornament More Than Eleven Years in the Making

Enjoy a peak at this Hallmark Prototype ornament. At a glance I knew it looked familiar, but it wasn't until I saw it next to the ornament that was actually produced did I realize just how interesting it is.

The prototype has 1980 decals on both sides, yet the ornament "Christmas Welcome" wasn't produced until 1991! Popular Hallmark Keepsake Artist, Linda Sickman is the sculpting artist for this beautiful piece.

There are many changes from the painted prototype to the actual produced ornament.

The ball ornaments at the base of the basket on both sides were removed.
The gold trim on the red ribbon was also eliminated.
The 1991 ornament has gold stenciled "Christmas Welcome" on the front and 1991 on the reverse side.
Notice that even the fruit and holly in the basket underwent many changes.

Many creations sculpted by Keepsake Artists never make it to production. But for one to be "in the works" for more than eleven years seems very unusual. Hummmmm...wonder what took so long?

We often get calls during "off season" asking about current year Baby's First Christmas and Our Christmas Together ornaments. In the past our answer has normally been, "Unfortunately the Hallmark Keepsakes don't premiere until July." But for this year, and at least through 2011, our answer will be, "We'll be happy to help!"

This year Hallmark Keepsakes is offering a few "year round" ornaments. They are Baby's First Christmas, Our Christmas Together and In Memorium. It is my understanding that these ornaments should be available year round at your Hallmark stores (and at http://www.hookedonornaments.com/ ).

The Baby's First Christmas is a re-issue of the wildly popular 2009 B is for Babies ornament. Porcelain booties are hanging from a ribbon with a little dated heart tag. The "2010" version includes two little heart charms - one is dated 2010 and the other is dated "2011". This ornament is available in store and at http://www.hookedonornaments.com/ now. It would make a lovely baby shower or christening gift. (See Item)

The Our Christmas Together ornament is a re-issue of the 2009 Our Christmas Together. Again the ornament comes with two charms, one dated "2010" and the other dated "2011". Both of these ornaments come in the regular Hallmark Keepsake Ornament box, but they have the little triangle sticker indicating that the 2010 and 2011 charms are included. (See Item)

The In Memorium ornament is not dated and has been available for a few years. This silver ornament is shaped like angel wings and a little heart hangs from the center. Both sides of the dangling heart read, "Always in our hearts". (See Item)

Another ornament that is available now (and right on time) is the 2010 Graduation ornament. This ornament is a photoholder ornament, so that you can insert a photo. There's a little diploma that you can add a note to, or as the literature suggests, replace with cash. "2010" dangles from the cap's tassle. (See Item)

We're gearing up for another busy week at Hooked on Ornaments. This week we're focusing on entering all of the 2010s into the database! Let me tell you, that's a BIG job! Recap March 2010 Collectively Speaking

Collectively Speaking is the local club newsletter from Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club (KOC)

The March 2010 Collectively Speaking proclaims 2010 as the Year of the Local Club. As Hallmark celebrates 100 years, they have decided to designate 2010 as the Year of the Local Club. A few things that local clubs can look forward to this year:

In March local clubs received a KOC shipment including a thank you DVD featuring some of the Keepsake Studio Artists, a game to be played at a local club meeting, and a special pin for each local club member.

In April, KOC will formally announce the Local Club Instore Signing Event Challenge winners. (You can find the preliminary information here.)

This spring local club members will have an opportunity to purchase specially designed merchandise from KOC - a shirt, a tote bag and a key ring to begin with.

Additional celebration details will be announced as they are finalized.

Throughout the year local clubs are invited to send KOC details about their activities and community service projects. One local club will be featured each month on www.KOCmembers.com Be sure to submit your club's information including a one page letter detailing your clubs 2010 plans, anything new, different or exciting that your club is planning and things that might set your club apart. Your club should also include at least one photo of your club. Additional information can be found at http://www.kocmembers.com/

2010 Special Collectors Edition
If you've been following us on Twitter or Facebook you know that KOC members are once again enjoying a special edition of the Dreambook in 2010. This large magazine-sized version of the Dream Book features beautiful photographs of the 2010 Keepsake line, behind-the-scenes stories and a wish list. The Special Edition Dream Books were mailed last week. The online Dream Book is slated to be available at www.KOCmembers.com in mid April. For Keeps, the KOC membership newsletter will ONLY be available online through KOCmembers.com beginning this year. KOC members with an email address on file will receive email notification when each new issue is posted online. The move is being made to allow for video clips, animations and full rotating images of ornaments. There will be six issues available in 2010.

2010 KOC Membership Cards shipping with Membership ornaments in May
2010 membership cards will be enclosed with membership ornaments that begin shipping in May. The card will be attached in the upper right hand corner of the packing slip. Be sure to peel your membership card off the packing slip and put it in a safe place. You'll need your card to purchase the limited-quantity Club Exclusive ornaments available at your local Hallmark Gold Crown stores.

Local Club Spotlight

Today is our final article recap of the March/April For Keeps. (Next week we will recap Collectively Speaking and we've got more fun planned!) For Keeps Recap Timely Treasures - Danville, VA
These 'collecting friends' keep a busy calendar.

Timely Treasures is highlighted in the March/April For Keeps Local Club Spotlight. (This club is close to my heart, as one of its members, is one of my favorite Hallmark friends. Hi Donna!) I only wish there was a club this active and involved in my area. The beginning of the For Keeps article starts off with the same thought - "Keeping a local club active and engaged takes a team of folks pitching in - planning, organizing and doing." Surprisingly, the article indicates the club doesn't even have a president! Just a core group of members that keep things running smoothly.

As in all local clubs, the members share a passion for collecting and decorating, but the club's main focus has been on charitable works. This year their cause has gone national and they've added a challenge to other Hallmark local clubs. As Donna Schweiger explains, "Our goal is to have 100 local clubs donate $100 each to the Susan G Komen Foundation in honor of Hallmark's 100th birthday." I LOVE it!

Throughout the year Timely Treasures has a schedule of activities that are not only fun, but truly beneficial and most importantly, I know that they are appreciated by the recipients. Donations to local food pantries and Valentines for nursing home residents were the activities for January and February for Timely Treasures.

From experience, I can tell you that you can always count on members of Timely Treasures to be in attendance at the Hallmark Keepsake national events. (I was delighted to run into Donna last year in Kansas City.) The For Keeps article hints at some interesting and fun local club meetings too - Sneak peeks, show and tells, and their own version of Antique Roadshow.

What a wonderful and inspiring Hallmark local club!

First Timers - For Keeps Recap
New ornament series offer years of collecting fun

This behind the scenes look article shares three new series that will be unveiled at the July 10 and 11 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere and hints at two additional new series to be unveiled at the October 9 and 10 Ornament Debut Weekend.

WINDOWS OF FAITH

The first new series is Windows of Faith. Inspired by the radiance of stained glass windows, this series will showcase these awe inspiring masterpieces. The first ornament in the series, Glad Tidings, is Tom Best's homage to the unheralded craftspeople who created their masterpieces in stone, iron and glass. Tom's ornament represents Luke 2:10 - "For behold, I bring you good tidings in great joy..."

The angel depicted was originally painted by Master Artist Bob Haas (you can find more of his work in the Little Gallery line). The ornament features a light clip for a truly beautiful display. According to the article, Tom is already working on the 2011 window which will feature the Madonna and Child.

FROSTY FUN DECADE

We've had lots of questions about what series will be next in the "decade" style. It's hard to top such popular series as Fabulous Decade and Cool Decade, but we are really excited about the Frosty Fun Decade! This new series will feature snow and snowmen and the first in series is sculpted by Cool Decade artist, Tammy Haddix.

You don't want to miss the special repaint of the first Frosty Fun Deade that will be available for purchase only to KOC members. The original ornament features blues and purples, but the repaint has a traditional red and green holiday palette.

Tammy is no stranger to "snowy" ornaments, sculpting the Snow Buddies and Making Memories series. Our favorite part of the 2010 Frosty Fun Decade? Notice how the snowman's tummy is one of the "O"s. What can you expect in the future? Fresh colors and glitter!

"Everything I do has glitter," Tammy says with a laugh.

Star Trek Legends
After 20 years and more than 50 Keepsake ornaments based on Star Trek, Keepsakes finally has its first "official" Star Trek series with Star Trek Legends. Who better to start with than Captain James T Kirk. The series will feature characters from the 1960s television show that began it all. The figures in the series will be larger and more detailed thatn the characters on the Star Trek magic ornaments.

Keepsake Artist Anita Marra Rogers sculpted the first in the series, but she is no stranger to sculpting Kirk. This ornament is her seventh take on the famous captain.

Art of the Crown - For Keeps Recap

Art of the Crown
Putting sparkle and shine on a Hallmark symbol

Inspired by "CowParade", the crown project offered Hallmark artists a chance to reflect their individuality and creativity through a blank canvas which began as a simple plastic resin crown. Over 255 crowns from all over the world, including some from Hallmark subsidiaries were completed. The crowns were displayed in Hallmark's Creative Resource Gallery in a month-long show. Some crowns will be displayed at the Imperial Hotel in Japan, before returning to the Hallmark Visitors Center, where they will rejoin the permanent display.

The original idea for the crown project came from Hallmark illustrators Stacey Lamb and Brett Iwan. They saw the project as a reflection of what Hallmarkers do everyday. It's Hallmark's 100th Birthday!
Hallmark Cards' 100th anniversary was officially Jan 10, 2010, but Hallmark will be celebrating all year long! Here's how you can join in on the celebration.

Visit Hallmark.com's centennial-themed website and enjoy a visit behind the scenes with a video tour of the creative process, an employee blog and learn about significant people and products in Hallmark's history.
Look for a beautifully illustrated book, Hallmark: A Century of Caring. This book chronicles the Hall family, as well as others who have helped shape the Hallmark brand. The book is available at Hallmark Gold Crown stores and other participating book sellers. Hallmark employees received personal copies of the book as a gift!

This summer you'll find a special collection of greeting cards that feature designs from the Hallmark archives updated with fresh looks and sound! Card images and messages from as early as 1915 will be given makeovers by the Hallmark innovations team. Each card will include information about its original background as well as other fun facts.
Birthday cards created by participants in Hallmark's Your Greeting Card Competition will be available online later this year, top-selling cards will also be available in stores.

Hallmark's First Musical Greeting Cards

Digging through a box of odds and ends today, we found an old issue of the Ornament Trader from June 1990. Inside, there was this photo of a Hall Brothers "Greetaphone Card" from 1924.

Each Greetaphone card had an unbreakable phonograph record attached - the one above played "My Friend," a verse by Edgar A Guest. It notes in the article that, unfortunately, the recordings were nearly inaudible and that dealers were credited for the cards.

How remarkable that an idea from 1924 would be something so fun and new when introduced January 2006 - 82 years later!! Hallmark now offers more than 500 cards with music, sound clips from movies, TV shows, and commercials. The high-quality of sound and fun variety of clips has made them a big hit. Everything old is new again!

Artist Spotlight: Chris Webb

Chris Webb started drawing in grade school as a cheap way to satsify his urge to create. Paper and pencils weren't too big a load on his young budget. He soon became known as "the artist" in school, with all around assuming that he would one day make his living that way.

While Chris took art in school, his instructor knew that the school's limited program wouldn't be enough. He suggested trying the Kansas City Art Institute. In the Institute's wood shop, Chris first got his hands on real scuplting and woodworking tools. It was the first time he had the opportunity to use high quality tools to explore his ideas. Every student was required to study in the shop, but most took the course and never came back. Chris practically never left, discovering talents there that he didn't know he had.

And where did Chris get the interest in motor vehicles that is apparent in each of his Keepsakes work? Chris has been finding his way around the inside of automobiles since he was fifteen. His uncle also owned a motor parts store where Chris spent a lot of his time.

Chris is probably most well known for the popular Fire Brigade series. These scale replicas of famous fire trucks are intricately detailed and fun, featuring siren sounds. Chris has sculpted many other Keepsakes featuring autos including many of the Hot Wheels ornaments and Kiddie Cars.

Chris will be joining us Saturday, April 17th from 10 am until noon at the April Warehouse Sale and Signing Event. He will sign ornaments that he sculpted during his years at Hallmark. If you aren't able to join us, place an order for Chris Webb ornaments and add a comment in the order notes that you would like the ornaments signed. We will have the ornaments signed by Chris and ship your order the week following the event.

The Siren Barbie Doll Club Exclusive Barbie ornament, available at the 2010 Ornament Premiere July 10-11. Patricia Andrews sculpted this stunning addition Keepsake ornament. The ornament is based on the The Siren Barbie doll from Mattel's 2007 Barbie Fashion Model Collection designed by Robert Best. The Siren Barbie ornament is created in porcelain with the stole made of faux fur.

2010 Hallmark Ornament Debut KOC Exclusive

Edythe Kegrize adds Switzerland to the popular Santas Around the World collection for 2010. The "Switzerland Santa" will be offered to Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club members during the October Ornament Debut, October 9-10. This ornament is Edythe's vision of "Samichlaus" from the German speaking areas of Switzerland. He is attired in folksy finery with a coat inspired by the paper cutting art called scherenschnitte and a cape revealing embroidery patterns from Swiss folk costumes.

What's Hot...

Well this past weekend found collectors on the hunt again. The hard to find item was the absolutely adorable Hallmark Cookie Sheet Countdown / Advent Magnet Calendar set.

Once again local stores received a VERY limited supply and sold out quickly leaving collectors disappointed and on the hunt. Based on the results of the three Hallmark Keepsake events, I would suggest NOT waiting for any special ornaments. I think that any collectors who take a chance on getting that "special" ornament on sale after Christmas, may be very disappointed this year. Based on the limited edition quantities it seems that Hallmark production numbers may have been reduced this year. Which will mean few items available at the end of the season.

& Signing Event

A huge amount of fun (and BARGAIN shopping too!) was had by all last Halloween Saturday at the Hooked on Ornaments Fall Warehouse Sale and Signing Event. It was our biggest event ever and we were joined by collectors from near and far. We were also very happy to welcome some Hallmark Keepsake notables that joined us as well!

We were honored to have retired Hallmark Keepsake artist, Ed Seale join us. Ed signed ornaments that he sculpted, chatted with collectors, answered questions and shared stories from his years at Hallmark. Our Ed Seale prototype auction ended at the warehouse with three of the four winners present at the event. A huge "Thank You" to Ed for spending the day with us and for donating the prototypes for the charity auction. A portion of the proceeds of the auction went to Kansas City Harvesters - an organization that fights hunger in the Kansas City area.

We were also proud to welcome our special "surprise" guest - Hallmark Keepsake artist Lynn Norton! Lynn chatted with collectors and answered questions as well. Do you know what Lynn's first "sculpt" was? The 1991 Starship Enterprise! What a way to get started! Thank you so much for joining us again! We were also pleasantly surprised to welcome Hallmark Keepsake Artist Joanne Eschrich and former Hallmark Keepsake Artist Chris Webb!

2009 October Ornament Debut
SELL OUTS!

The grapevine tells us that the 2009 October Ornament Debut ornaments were quick and fast sell outs nationwide. Sources indicate that most stores received only 4 or 5 of each of the special edition ornaments such as the gold Lionel Chessie, Santas Around the World Sweden and Pony for Christmas.

I've talked to quite a few customers this weekend and today and everyone has a similar story. The most wanted October Debut ornaments were simply not available in their local stores.

We predict that these VERY hard to find ornaments will climb in secondary market value just as fast as they disappeared off the shelves.

Memories For the Making PRIZES - Oh My!

Now that the dust has started to settle following the August Keepsake Ornament Club national event, Memories for the Making, we've been getting emails and phone calls. It seems that some of the prizes that were awarded during the event were more than they seemed at first glance.

We had an email just last week from a collector who thought they had received the 1998 Spotlight on Snoopy. Once they looked inside the box, it wasn't just any old Snoopy inside! It was the 1998 Spotlight on Snoopy COLORWAY ornament! That VERY hard to find ornament was awarded back in 1998 to the winners of the photo contest held during the convention. Our records indicate there were only 84 of the colorway in existence!

We had been told that there would be goodies sprinkled in with the prizes at the Memories for the Making event and they weren't joking. What fun!

We also received a phone call the week following the event from Tim in St. Louis. When he opened up his Bingo prize, the 2006 Very Friendly Christmas Tree, Winnie the Pooh Collection ornament. He found he had a prize inside also. Tim contacted Hallmark Cards with his questions as the ornament and the things that he found inside the box seemed to add up to a very special find.

According to Hallmark Cards, what Tim had received was an approved manufacturers sample. A one of a kind item! Before the ornaments go into production, the manufacturing facility submits a "sample" to Hallmark Cards, Inc for approval. This is the approved sample that Tim received as his Bingo prize.

We asked Tim to share a little about himself and his prize...

"I've been seriously collecting since 1991, when I could not find the Enterprise ornament and called every store in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Arkansas looking for one. I had Hallmark ornaments before that, but this, in combination with a friend who had already been collecting, really got me hooked. I actually joined the KOCC that year thinking I could order the Enterprise directly from Hallmark if I were a member... that obviously didn't work out, but I've been a member ever since! I have about 2000 ornaments now.

I've been to every event (not multiple cities the same year) since the first 1994 Expo in St. Louis and this year was the first time I ever won anything, which was the Puppy Love repaint.

I played Bingo on Saturday and our table won twice, so I took home six ornaments. I'm not a Disney collector, I only have 22 in my collection, most of which are Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore or Pixar. I always wanted the 2006 "A Very Friendly Christmas" but never got it for whatever reason. I spotted it on the prize table and grabbed it. I normally look all my ornaments over before I leave, but there was simply no time, so I had no idea there was anything special about it until I opened it up at home, after the event. And you know the rest!"

Thinking about all the ornaments laid out on the Bingo prize table, it just makes me wonder how many folks took home a prize even better than they ever dreamed?

Memories for the Making...

Wow. Just a tiny three letter word describes the entire spectacular 2009 Keepsake Ornament Club National event, "Memories for the Making," held this past weekend in Kansas City. It was an amazing time filled with Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments and the collectors that love them.

The event began on Friday and ended Saturday evening. I'm sure most collectors were like me wishing there could have been just one more day. It's hard to leave when you're having so much fun. There were games, goodies, seminars, Keepsake studio artists, prizes, room hopping, old friends and new...

Hallmark Keepsake artists and staff (all you folks in the purple shirts) did a wonderful job with the event and I think I speak for everyone when I send out a heartfelt thank you for all that they did. I had an absolutely amazing time and I can't wait to do it again. All of your work is much appreciated by this collector. Thank you.

As for "news" from the event...

I believe I heard there were approximately 1400 who attended the Local Club Dinner on Friday night. We were all honored to have Don Hall, Jr speak at the dinner.

A video featuring our favorite eskimo was premiered, (you can view a piece of the video on our Facebook page), which will be offered as an e-card on www.hallmark.com this fall.

Tom Best revealed he has already designed the 2010 Frosty Friends.
John Wagner indicated there will be several Maxine ornaments in 2011 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Maxine.
We have heard of at least one prototype being received as a prize during Bingo. Check the ornament in your boxes.

The Eagle Has Landed
World History and Hallmark Ornament Trivia
The Eagle has Landed and the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament that celebrates the event.

Forty years ago, I was one of an estimated 600 million people that watched the Apollo 11 landing live on television.* Once astronauts Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin were ready to go outside, the Eagle was depressurized, the hatch was opened and Armstrong made his way down the ladder first. He placed his left foot on the surface at 2:56 UTC July 21, 1969, then spoke the following:

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." These words marked forever an historic moment for the entire world!

In 1994 the Hallmark Ornament "The Eagle Has Landed" celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the first lunar landing. It features the sound of Neil Armstrong's voice repeating his famous "one small step" message. This ornament available is available at www.hookedonornaments.com .

A valuable "licensing" lesson was learned when Neil Armstrong sued Hallmark Cards in 1994 for using his name and a recording of the "one small step" quote in the ornament without his permission. The lawsuit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money which Armstrong donated to Purdue University.

Celebrating 25 Years of Magic The 2009 Magic Express ornament commemorates 25 years of Hallmark Keepsake Magic ornaments. Hallmark Keepsakes introduced the first "magic" ornaments back in 1984 with the introduction of "lighted" ornaments. Two years later, motion was added in 1986. Until 1989 the "Magic" ornaments were ornaments that featured light, motion or a combination of the two features. In 1989, sound was introduced to the magic ornaments with the 1989 Baby's First Christmas. This ornament was the first to feature light, motion and sound. However, sound did not become a "common" feature for magic ornaments until 1992.

In the beginning of Magic ornaments power was provided by plugging the ornaments into the miniature Christmas light strands. But the 1997 Night Before Christmas ornament introduced the wind up powered ornament. Much like a jewelry box functions, you simply wind the key and music plays as different components of the ornament move. Another early windup was one of my favorites, the 1998 Santa's Merry Workshop.

As miniature Christmas light strands (and electrical specs and regulations) have changed over the years collectors have had a more difficult time finding light strands that will work with their older Hallmark Keepsake Magic ornaments. Hallmark responded with the light strand adapters a few years ago and most of those problems have been solved. But that may have also be the primary reason for the move to battery powered ornaments. Battery operated ornaments became more common in 2001 with the Kris and the Kringles ornament. It is my understanding that 2009 marks the final year for the UL ornaments, those ornaments that plug directly into your Christmas light strand.

But don't think for a minute that the changes and advancements in magic ornaments have stopped. In the July 2009 issue of For Keeps, two of the primary forces behind the Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, Ken Crow (Hallmark Master Artist) and Ron Carlson (Senior Product Development Engineer) indicate that "the possibilities for Keepsake ornaments (Magic ornaments in particular) are endless." Ken says, "We're almost at the point where, if we can dream it, we can make it happen."

You Never Know WHO Might Attend!

The Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Premiere is always a "can't miss" for me. And even though the MIDNIGHT Premieres are a bit past my bedtime, I can't resist being there to join in the excitement. With the annual July Event just a few days away, I'm reminded of my favorite "Ornament Premiere Encounter".

In recent years there has been a VIP visitor at the MIDNIGHT ornament premiere in a local Kansas City Hallmark Store. DONALD HALL, JR ! Yes, Donald Hall, Jr, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hallmark Cards!

Mr. Hall arrived at midnight, introduced himself to the store manager and explained that he stopped by to observe the reaction of the ornament collectors to the new Keepsake Ornament Line. He wasn't out for any VIP treatment, introductions, or fanfare, in fact he'd prefer to go un-noticed. He just wanted to stand back and observe collectors reactions as they viewed the new line of ornaments for the first time. He was friendly when a few Local Club Members approached him and even posed for photos when asked, but really just wanted to see first hand the response to the new ornament line.

Just think about it...
Donald Hall, Jr is CEO of one of the most respected and profitable companies in the nation. The Hall Family is of Billionaire status, and their Hall Family Foundation is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the United States. This man has thousands of employees working for him, any of which he could have asked to go into a store, observe, and have a full report on his desk Monday Morning. Yet, he did it himself, not just one year, but several.

Donald Hall, Jr spending his Friday Night at a Hallmark store, that tells me he really does care about ornament collectors opinions and strives to make sure his company is producing Keepsake Ornaments that collectors will love.

Mr. Hall, you've impressed me...and I hope to see you out there this weekend looking over our shoulders once again!

Is It Dated?
One of the most frequent questions we are asked has become a loaded question.

In the pre 2000 ornament days, it was a much easier question to answer. Yes, ALL the "family" Hallmark ornaments were dated . . . You could count on that. And, for others, if it was considered "dated", the date was prominent... you could clearly see the date half way across the room!

Today, that question is much harder to answer.

Many family ornaments are not dated, Son and Daughter ornaments for example have not included the date in recent years.

MANY Hallmark ornament boxes indicate "Dated 20__" however, when you look for the date on the ornament, it may be hard to find. Often it is just a small copyright date printed or embossed on the bottom or elsewhere on the ornament. A good example is the 2008 Jolly Rider Harley-Davidson Santa. The box indicates "Dated 2008"; but when a collector called to ask, "Where's the date?"... after close examination, we laughed when we found a tiny "2008" embossed on the seat of Santa's pants!

Our goal is to make the ornament descriptions at Hooked on Ornaments complete and accurate, making us the #1 source of accurate Hallmark Keepsake Ornament information. But answering the "Is it dated" question these days with a simple yes or no often has us scratching our heads.

Hallmark Ornament Collecting: Questions from Collectors

I have the complete series of ____Fill in your series here ___ doesn't that make the ornaments worth more?

Thanks Beth for your question! As Hallmark ornament collectors we all know how important it is to each of us personally to have a complete series. No matter how long or hard we have to hunt to find that last missing piece. No matter that we may have to pay a little more just to get that hard to find one. We simply NEED to have every numbered piece offered in a series. Many collectors have even widened the definition of "complete series" to include any complement pieces, such as the Hallmark limited edition colorway ornaments or the special edition pieces offered in some of the longer running series. Honestly, the concept of the "series" predisposes us to want to have each item offered. As Hallmark ornament collectors we normally buy the very first ornament in the series with the knowledge that we'll be buying every other item in the series offered until the series ends. But does it affect the secondary market value of the ornaments if you have a complete series?

In a word, no. In fact, when it comes to selling a complete series of ornaments, most buyers indicate that they feel they should receive a discounted price, definitely not a higher price. Since secondary market values and insurance values are based on current selling prices, there is no difference in the values of the individual ornaments whether they are sold individually or as part of a completed set or series.

Childhood Memories and Classic Toys

The Hallmark studio artists have always done a wonderful job crafting Hallmark Keepsake ornaments that evoke memories of special moments in our lives. Hooked on Ornaments recently added a new "unofficial collection" category to our Hallmark Ornaments by Series page that highlights a growing group of ornaments based on our favorite childhood toys.

In 2007 Hallmark began a new unofficial collection of Fisher-Price toy ornaments that immediately appealed to me. These ornaments are modelled after toys that I played with as a child and my own children played with as toddlers. The toy ornaments are not limited to Fisher-Price toys though; we've included such favorite toys as the 2007 Chatty Cathy and the 2008 Little Red Tricycle.

When we began compiling ornaments that qualified for this category some of our earlier year favorites also came to mind. You might remember the Golden Book ornaments from 1999-2001 featuring one of my all time favorites - "The Poky Little Puppy." We also included the collection of three vintage pull toys from 2001 featuring Wiggles, Waddles and Waggles.

As we come across other toys in the Hallmark Keepsake line that evoke our memories of childhood we'll continue to 'grow' the category. The 2009 Hallmark Ornament Premiere is July 11 and 12. During Ornament Premiere Keepsake Ornament Club members will be able to purchase 1 club exclusive ornament with proof of club membership. This year's Hallmark Ornament Premiere club exclusive ornament is the porcelain Capucine Barbie ornament.
